They'd be committing farm suicide if they did that.

Depends on what it would cost the Mets. If it's like 2-3 top prospects, I wouldn't do it. If it cost them maybe one big prospect, and a few mid-level prospects, I would defintley do it for the Mets. Obviously Lee is going to be a FA at season end, but this would actually help lower the costing price that it would take.

The Mets are right now are 2.5 games back, and adding Lee to that rotation could be huge for them. It's all going to come down to asking price and what the Mariners would want.

Depends on what they want. I wouldn't give up Niese, Ike, Flores or Mejia for him. If they want to center a deal around Martinez and Tejada then go ahead. I wouldn't mind that because then if he doesn't sign we get 2 draft picks in a good draft next year.

That seems like a fantasy to me. If anything, I think the Mariners would want Niese or Davis as a centerpiece and Martinez and Tejada as secondary pieces. After the haul that Toronto got for Halladay, in a deal which Lee was involved, I'd think Seattle would want a little something like that.

No team would give them that much... Lee's value is going to keep going down.. He is only a 2 month rental is what has to be remembered.. He has already come out and said he is testing FA. Meaning you aren't going to get him to sign an extension. People have already said Minaya is balking at giving up Niese in a deal for Lee. If Niese isn't going then there is absolutely no chance Davis will.

Fair enough, but I wonder if Martinez and Tejada are going to be enough to even start a discussion. I know they're the 3rd and 9th best prospects in the Mets system, but they seem... underwhelming to me. The Mariners would have to bank on the potential there.

Mets Will NOT Trade Niese, Ike or Mejia for Lee

Quote:
Bob Klapisch of FoxSports.com talked to Mets senior officials and says a) the team has no interest in trading Jon Niese to the M’s for Cliff Lee, and b) ‘they have no interest in acquiring either Kevin Millwood or Jake Westbrook.’

That said, according to Mark Hale of the New York Post, “The Mets are willing to trade for Lee without requiring a negotiating window to sign him to an extension.”

The Mets view Lee as a ‘rental player,’ who they are unwilling to trade Niese, Ike Davis or Jenrry Mejia to get.

….i’ve heard from people close to the team who say the Mets are capable of matching any offer on seattle’s table, because no team is going to overpay to get this guy… the question is, will that work for the Mariners… or, will they be better off just keeping him, seeing if they can turn it around this season, then getting draft picks as compensation for when he leaves to sign with a new team this winter… the Twins are in good position for lee, as are the Dodgers… but, the Mets seem confident in their position, as well… i think at this point, the Mariners just need to decide who they want, and what type of trade, if any, works for them…

I think the Mets have to pursue Lee, but of course not give up Niese or Davis.

The Mets can get away with acquiring Lee without giving up those two guys, because a lot of people have started to realize that the Mets have a deeper and more talented farm system than we thought.

They probably could center a deal around Martinez and Tejada, although they got other guys down there they could include like Brad Holt, Dillon Gee, Reese Havens, and a few other guys that could fall into the puzzle.

The Mariners are pushing for Niese right now because they know a lot of teams are going to want Lee and fight for him, they know the Mets have a lot, so they're going to start big and work their way down. I mean seriously, you don't start at the bottom.

The farm system isn't great and I have to admit I am tired of them trading for "that big name". They keep doing all the time and thats why their farm system is perceived to be terrible all the time, and sometimes it is. I don't WANT them to, but I think they will trade for him. Its kind of funny because in the offseason all the new york radio guys and sports analysts were saying the Mets needed to rebuild their farm system and look towards the future. Now these same guys are saying the Mets NEED to get Lee if they want to make it to the playoffs this year. They need to make up their minds.

With guys like Niese and Davis being talent from our minors, I'd like to think that some of these guys in our minors that may be dealt could have the same impact in a year or two....
