Rays 'won't go near' Prince Fielder

The Rays have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Prince Fielder ahead of the deadline, as they go on a pennant run.

One source close to the team, however, indicated the Rays “won’t go near the guy.”

Tampa Bay would be unable to afford his arbitration total for 2011.

It would be stupid of them to go after Prince. Sure, they could use a power bat in the middle of the lineup, but getting Prince would pretty much assure that Crawford is gone.

considering our ownership's unwillingness to spend, you're probably right. I've rekindled an interest in the Rays and in baseball in general lately. I would love for us to add a big bat to the heart of the lineup, but not many sluggers are available, unfortunately. several teams are still in the race and so they're refusing to part with their best hitters.

it's not just Crawford we're trying to retain. guys like Pena, Bartlett, and Soriano are free agents this winter as well, and we'll probably try to keep at least one of them. Fielder would be a nice addition, but we'd have to pay $100M or more to lock him up and it's just not worth it IMO. overall, I'm content with our current lineup, but it'd be nice to add a starter such as Ricky Nolasco to the rotation.

Crawford is going to get a very nice payday next year. Id love him to sign with the Yankees but thats doubtful.
