I have been a fan since I was 8 (too many years ago)...actually 32 to be exact

My favorite current player is Mo, followed by Jeter

My all-time favorite player has always been Thurman Munson, I'm still saddened by his passing, followed by Graig Nettles (I played 3rd base) and Lou Gehrig

My all time favorite moment in Yankee history was the 1 game playoff in 1978

Mickey Mantle was an athlete like very others...Maybe Willie Mays, but in that era, there was no one even close, imagine his stats and career had he never picked up the bottle, or injured his leg....Or think about this, if ARod is $25 million a year, what would "The Mick" get? His stats are even more impressive when you take into consideration that half his games were played in the OLD OLD Yankee Stadium...480+ feet to center field with statues in the playing area....

A man after my own heart.

Mantle could do everything. He had all the tools. He could hit for average and power. He could run. He could field with the best of them. Who knows what his numbers would have been if he had not played almost his entire career on bad legs. Forget the drinking. Of course I wish he had not ruined his body with alcohol. But Hack Wilson drank heavily. Babe Ruth was famous for it. Pete Alexander was nursing a hangover when he came in to strikeout Lazzeri in 26.

And Mickey hit balls where others only dreamed of. Twice he came within feet of clearing the right field pavillion in the old Stadium, something no major leaguer ever did. (they say negro leaguer Josh Gibson did. But I don't know whether that was ever verfied.) I don't know if they ever accurately measured the ball he hit in Washington in 53.

I once read a story where the New York reporters were greeted by coach Bill Dickey at the Phoenix (I guess that is where they trained in 51) airport ranting and raving about this kid they had in camp. The reporters went to Stengel and said that "Dickey says you have another Cobb in camp."

BTW, the dimensions in the old stadium before renovation were 463 to straight away center and 475 to Death Valley, just left of center. But that is still quite a distance.

I knew it was a "country mile' to straight away center...just wasnt sure the exact length....for the kids these days...the batters "eye" black area in this stadium was actually in play in the old......

Since 1964? How are old are you? I'd live to get some Yankee knowledge from you...I'm only 14, and have been following the team since I got into Baseball in 2004 (bad year to start following the Yankees, I know. I cried when Boston beat us in Game 7). I wish I could've seen the greats from those times play. Mantle, Berra, Ford, on to the Zoo with Reggie, and Munson, Larsen's perfect game in the Series, and then the era of Donnie Baseball.

I will celebrate my 52nd birthday on Thursday.

And yeah, I would love to share some of my memories. I saw Mantle.(see my favorite moment.) Berra was a little before my time. I saw Ford pitch on tv. The zoo years were special, especially after they were down for a decade. I am not quite old enough to have seen Larsen's perfecto. Donnie may have been the second best 1st baseman we ever had, behind Gehrig of course.
