Prince of Persia: 3.5/10
![]() Prince of Persia is this years latest example of a film based off of a video game. Of course, in 2008 the world was tortured by the train wreck known as "Max Payne." Needless to say, Jerry Bruckheimer and crew were hoping to avoid making the same mistakes that Max Payne made. The good news is that Prince of Persia contained a slightly stronger story and script than its 2008 video-film companion (though not by much). The bad news, unfortunately, is that Prince of Persia was terribly miscast and features some of the corniest writing and sappy actions shots in recent memory. Prince of Persia tells the story of Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal), a man-become-prince when he's adopted by the king of the Persian empire. Ever trying to prove his worth and skill, Dastan leads his men to attack the scared city of Alamut. Upon conquerering it, Dastan retrieves a mysterious dagger and, after being framed for the murder of his king father and going on the run with Alamut's princess, Tamina (Gemma Arterton), learns of its true power. It is then that Dastan begins to piece together the reason his nation invaded Alamut in the first place. It seems that a rather universal complaint is the casting of Jake Gyllenhaal as Dastan. While the rest of the films cast is acceptable, Gyllenhaal sticks out like a sore thumb. Even disguised with long hair, a full beard and battle scars, Gyllenhaal's look fails to blend himself in with the rest of the cast. Ultimately, Gyllenhaal's undeniably American look cannot be overlooked and it certainly impacts his performance. Another unacceptable feature of Gyllenhaal's casting is the accent thrust upon him. By no means is it one of the worst fake accents, but it is, however, completely unnatural to the point of sounding forced and further helps enforce the films poorly written dialogue. At the same time, there were questions of Gyllenhaal being a viable action star much similar to when Matt Damon signed on as Jason Bourne. Safe to say that Gyllenhaa's transition to action hero wasn't as smooth as many of his movements appeared to be awkward. Through the awkward actions, the poor look and the unnatural dialogue, Gyllenhaal managed to give a decent performance and it was easy to see his heart was in it, but in the end it wasn't enough to not second guess his casting. Not all the blame can be placed on Gyllenhaal's miscasting though. While the story and plot wasn't perfect by any means, it seemed Oscar worthy compared to the film's written dialogue and interplay between characters. Prince of Persia accomplishes that of which no film wants to: being so corny that it's funny. Sadly, the film fails in every genre element. During the moments it tries for humor, the jokes are so badly recycled that it's hilarious. During the moments of familial embrace one cannot help but laugh at how forced it is presented. The romantic storyline is so absurd that it's laughable and because it's a Disney movie the lack of suspense is even more lacking as is the overall action. Bluntly, all the dialogue is a disaster and causes it to be, albeit indirectly and unintentionally, one of the funniest movies of the year. The only words of comfort that can be spoken are that, if anything, the film is a visual treat. It won't be up for any Oscars in cinematography, but the film does a good job of capturing the stories setting. The good ends there though as even the films adventure seems lackadaisical. Anyway you put it, Prince of Persia is a bust and one can only pray that it doesn't become the new Pirates of the Caribbean. Prince of Persia is this years Max Payne. It's enjoyable for all the wrong reasons and the mix of Gyllenhaal's accent plus the dialogue would make the viewer wish they'd rather be having "the talk" with their parents while having two root canals. A loyal video gamer and Prince of Persia player sums the movie up perfectly: "it is one of the poorest adaptations ever and may be the corniest movie this year." |

7/10 Their was action throughout the whole film, never really a dull moment but some parts made you wonder who's side is she really on America or Russia. The only thing that really ruined it for me was the ending. |

Cendrillon (1900) - 7/10, some very interesting visual effects and it's a wonder how they did it back in 1900
La lanterne magique (1903) - 7/10, once again, very interesting visual effects for its time Jeanne d'Arc (1900) - 7/10, once again impressive for its time Le monstre (1903) - 9/10, fascinating little movie that is enjoyable and only 3 minutes long The Great Train Robbery (1903) - 9/10, known as one of the earliest films with an actual story that is enjoyable and full of action Stranger Than Paradise (1984) - 10/10, an influential and great independent film filled with comedy and a great ending True Romance (1993) - 7/10, a good action film but I don't get why it is loved by so many, the plot is preposterous and some of the jokes fall flat The Breakfast Club (1985) - 7/10, decent comedy but some of the jokes fall flat Gattaca 1997) - 7/10, decent sci-fi film that could have been a lot better, the plot got a bit ridiculous at times, especially with the whole murder thing Elmer Gantry (1960) - 10/10, a fantastic performance by Burt Lancaster, and the movie is funny and full of satire throughout Capote (2005) - 10/10, a ****ing masterpiece and an all time great performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman, one of the best films of the decade, really looking forward to what Bennet Miller does next I'm Here (2010) - 9/10, a very good short film by Spike Jonz that manages to be emotionally engaging throughout its 30 minute running time Plastic Bag (2010) - 9/10, a very good short film by Ramin Bahrani that manages to make an important point without seeming preachy or pretentious The Spanish Prisoner (1997) - 9/10, very surprised to see this very good movie by David Mamet, as I did not enjoy Spartan, another movie he has done; it's full of twists that surprise and shock Law Abiding Citizen (2009) - 3/10, what could have been a very mediocre film becomes crap due to its horrible ending The first four were all done by Georges Melies, who also did Le voyage dans la lune which I highly recommend. |

I also agree about what you said about "True Romance", never been a fan of this movie. It's alright but it's far from being my fav Tarentino for sure. My fav Tarentino is definitely "Reservoir Dogs" anyhow. Followed by "Jackie Brown" and "Pulp Fiction". |

Yeah i agree to with True Romance BUT i mean tarantino didn't direct it, and he was pissed how they made it. He even said he didnt want to be associated with it at all becuase they changed the script, mostly the ending, and he hated the director, he was a very angry man when he didnt get what he wanted lol. Just proves his knowledge is film making though, he knew what he writes, he didnt want anyone else to touch it. |

My biggest beef with True Romance is that it lacks more Oldman and Pitt.

I've finally watched "Do The Right Thing" today. I give it a 9/10, definitely Spike Lee's best movie IMO.
![]() And yesterday I've rewatched "After Hours", awesome movie, can't get tired of it. Easily 10/10, Scorsese at his finest.

Law Abiding Citizen - 2/10
Mr. and Mrs. Smith - 3/10 Watched the former with some friends at around 3 AM for "t3h lolz" and the latter out of sheer boredom. Both are miserable films, putting aside some half decent special effects.:tsk: |

Haha, Persona is rather mind-blowing. I had to go back and re-watch some parts just to get what was happening at times.

You, Me and Dupree
6/10 Owen Wilson is funny in it but, the rest of the cast sucks, probably the last time I watch a movie on TV in a while. |

- 8.5/10Really enjoyed this film. First off Jonah Hill was very impressive with his some what creepy performance setting aside comedy. The way it was done made it seem very real, no fancy angles, very fast and aggressive movements of the camera and zoom ins. Marissa Tomei was sexy like always, and john C Reilly character i really like, he fit it well, big guy, lonely, women problems, fits him well it seems. The movie is very good and people should see it, dont go because its in the "comedy" genre, its funny, but more about the situation. |
