Jason Varitek out 4-6 weeks

"It may be time for the remaining players on the Red Sox to seek Howard Hughes-like seclusion, because the hits just keep on coming. The latest victim: catcher Jason Varitek.

According to a report on Ch. 4 last night, the Red Sox captain will be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a broken foot.

The news came just hours after the Sox traded Pawtucket infielder Angel Sanchez to the Astros for catcher Kevin Cash, who spent parts of 2007 and '08 in Boston as knuckleballer Tim Wakefield's personal catcher.

With Victor Martinez already on the 15-day disabled list with a broken thumb, Cash probably must become something more, since he and career minor leaguer Gustavo Molina are the Sox' only catchers at the moment.

It's unclear when Varitek was injured. He limped off the field following the top of the fourth inning in Tuesday's 8-5 victory against the Rays. Manager Terry Francona later described the injury as a cramp, and Varitek remained in the game to contribute an RBI single and a sacrifice fly."
